Ho’oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation, forgiveness, and restoring harmony. While there are several traditional forms of Ho’oponopono, its central teaching is remarkably simple: healing begins within.

One story that has always inspired me is that of Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len. According to the widely shared account, he helped transform a ward for the criminally insane not by treating the patients directly, but by practicing Ho’oponopono while reviewing each patient’s file. He repeated a simple prayer:

“I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.”

Whether understood literally or symbolically, the story beautifully illustrates a profound principle: the world we experience is deeply influenced by our inner consciousness. To change our experience, we must first change ourselves.

For many years, this story has served as a reminder to me that the deepest healing does not come from trying to change other people or control life’s circumstances. It begins by changing our relationship to our own thoughts, beliefs, and inner experience.

Living in Hawaiʻi, we are surrounded by extraordinary beauty every day. Yet even paradise cannot protect us from emotional suffering. We struggle with relationships, anxiety, grief, physical illness, uncertainty, and the many challenges of everyday life. It is natural to believe that happiness will come when another person changes, when our circumstances improve, or when the world around us becomes different.

Ho’oponopono offers another perspective. It teaches that lasting change begins within.

Dr. Hew Len described these struggles as arising from memories and beliefs held within the subconscious mind — the unihipili. As these memories are lovingly released, we naturally become more aligned with the wisdom of the Aumakua, often described as the higher or divine aspect of ourselves. The uhane, or conscious mind, is then free to experience life with greater clarity, peace, and balance.

In Zero Limits, Dr. Hew Len and Joe Vitale write:

“All problems begin as thought. But having a thought is not the problem. The problem is that all our thoughts are imbued with painful memories.”

This philosophy resonates deeply with my work as a psychotherapist and hypnotherapist.

Although Ho’oponopono is a spiritual healing tradition rather than a form of psychotherapy, both recognize the powerful influence of the subconscious mind. In hypnotherapy, we gently explore the beliefs, memories, and emotional patterns that continue to shape our lives, often outside of conscious awareness. As these old patterns are understood and released, clients frequently experience greater emotional freedom, healthier relationships, increased confidence, and a renewed sense of inner peace.

Whether through Ho’oponopono, psychotherapy, or hypnotherapy, healing often begins by bringing compassionate awareness to the subconscious beliefs and memories that shape our lives. As these patterns soften and dissolve, we naturally experience greater peace, clarity, and freedom.

Whether you live on Maui, are visiting our beautiful island, or are anywhere else in the world, the opportunity for healing is always available. Through secure online psychotherapy and hypnotherapy, meaningful inner work can take place wherever you are. For those on Maui, in-person sessions may also be available by arrangement.

Perhaps the greatest lesson of Ho’oponopono is that lasting change begins within. When we change our consciousness, we often discover that the world we experience changes as well.
